Pediatric dental care has two main components – preventive treatments at our office and preventive care at home. Our goal is to help preserve your child’s oral health, and to help them learn the good oral habits that will lead to a lifetime of healthy smiles.
Preventive Treatments from a Pediatric Dentist
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit the dentist for the first time as soon as their teeth begin to erupt, or no later than 1 year of age, for “well baby” checkups. During these visits, our pediatric dentists examine your child’s teeth and gums, monitor any orthodontic concerns, and track jaw and tooth development. Pediatric dentists also work to develop positive, trusting relationships with the child so that he or she will feel comfortable, and serve as a resource for parents. Preventive treatments like dental sealants or fluoride may be provided, and recommendations may be made regarding at-home oral hygiene, finger sucking, or nutrition.
Preventive Home Care
Oral care at home includes many different factors, including:
- Brushing
- Flossing
- Diet
- Oral habits (thumb and finger sucking, pacifier use, etc.)
- Sippy cup use
- Fluoride
- General oral hygiene (not sharing eating utensils, cleaning pacifiers and toys with the mouth, etc.)
Our pediatric specialists will work with you to help you learn the best way to care for your child’s teeth at home, and will happily answer any questions and concerns. Please feel free to contact our office to learn more or make an appointment with our dental professionals.
